Why I Built IconMarvel

Icons are a small part of a digital product, but they can have a big impact on how a website, app, or interface looks and feels. Designers and developers use icons every day. But finding the right icon, checking different options, customizing it, and getting it ready to use can take more time than expected. That is one of the main reasons I built IconMarvel. I wanted to make working with icons simpler: find the right icon, customize it when needed, and get it ready to use without unnecessary friction. IconMarvel is an icon platform for designers and developers that brings icon discovery, customization, downloads, and modern design and development workflows together in one place.

The Problem Wasn't a Lack of Icons

There are already many places to find icons. The problem is what happens after you start looking for one. You may search through different websites, try different keywords, compare styles, preview multiple options, download an icon, make adjustments, and then figure out how to use it in your project. The individual steps may seem small. But when you repeat them across different projects, they become part of the everyday workflow. I wanted to solve that larger problem. Instead of treating icon discovery, customization, and integration as completely separate tasks, I wanted IconMarvel to bring more of the workflow together. The idea is simple:

Search → Discover → Preview → Customize → Download/Export → Integrate → Use

That became the foundation for IconMarvel.

Building for Designers and Developers

Icons sit between design and development. A designer may need to find an icon that fits a particular interface and adjust it to match the visual direction of a project. A developer may need that same icon in a practical format or through a development workflow. That is why IconMarvel is designed for both designers and developers.

For designers, the platform focuses on making icon discovery and customization easier, including browser-based customization and the Figma plugin. For developers, IconMarvel provides SVG and PNG downloads, as well as developer-oriented integrations including React, Vue, NPM, APIs, and CDN. The goal isn't to create two separate experiences. It is to make the journey from finding an icon to actually using it more straightforward.

Making Icon Search Smarter

One of the first problems I wanted to address was icon discovery. Finding an icon isn't always as simple as knowing its exact name. Sometimes you know what you want to communicate, but you don't know the exact keyword used by the icon creator. You might be looking for an icon related to payments, communication, navigation, security, travel, settings, or another concept. That's where AI-powered semantic search becomes useful.

Instead of relying only on exact keyword matches, IconMarvel's semantic search is designed to understand the meaning behind a search and help users discover relevant icons. The goal is not to make searching more complicated. It is the opposite: Help people spend less time figuring out what an icon is called and more time finding the icon they need.

Customizing Icons Without Leaving the Workflow

Finding a suitable icon is only part of the job. Sometimes an icon is close to what you need, but it doesn't quite fit the project. You may want to change its appearance, adjust its size or position, modify colors, or make other visual adjustments before using it. IconMarvel allows users to customize icons directly in the browser before downloading or exporting them. That means a suitable icon doesn't always have to be discarded simply because it isn't perfect in its original form. The workflow becomes:

Find → Customize → Use.

SVG and PNG for Different Workflows

IconMarvel is not limited to a single image format. The platform supports both SVG and PNG icons. SVG is an important format for modern digital interfaces and development workflows, while PNG remains useful when a raster image is the better fit for a particular project or use case. Supporting both formats makes the platform useful across different design and development requirements. The goal is not to force every project into the same workflow. It is to make it easier to get the icon in the format that fits the work.

From Design to Development

An icon doesn't stop being useful when it is found. Eventually, it needs to become part of a real website, application, interface, or design workflow. That's why IconMarvel includes tools that connect the discovery process with the way designers and developers actually work. Designers can use the Figma plugin as part of their design workflow. Developers can work with icons through React, Vue, NPM, APIs, and CDN, alongside the platform's downloadable assets. These capabilities are connected by the same idea: An icon should be easy to move from discovery to actual use.

More Than an Icon Library

There are many websites where people can download icons. Simply creating another collection would not address the larger problem I wanted to solve. IconMarvel is built around the workflow surrounding an icon. You can start by searching for an idea. You can explore and preview relevant icons. You can customize an icon when it needs to fit your project. You can download or export it. And when you are working on a development or design project, you have additional ways to integrate icons into your workflow. That's what makes IconMarvel more than a place to find individual icon files. It is an attempt to make the overall process of working with icons simpler.

What IconMarvel Is Really About

The more I thought about the problem, the simpler the idea became. The goal isn't to make people spend more time managing icons. It is to make the process around them easier.

Search. Discover. Preview. Customize. Download. Integrate. Use.

Every part of IconMarvel is connected to that workflow. Whether someone needs one icon for a landing page or icons for a larger digital product, the basic problem remains the same: Find the right icon and get it ready to use with as little unnecessary friction as possible.

Why I Chose to Build It

I didn't want IconMarvel to be just another website where people download icons. I wanted to build a platform around the actual workflow people go through when working with icons. That means thinking about search, discovery, customization, formats, design workflows, development workflows, and the transition between them. It also means continuing to improve the platform as those workflows evolve. The product can grow, but the underlying idea remains simple: Icons should be easier to find, easier to customize, and easier to use. That is the idea behind IconMarvel.

Where IconMarvel Is Going

IconMarvel is continuing to evolve around that same goal. The direction is to make icon discovery more useful, customization more convenient, and the transition from design to development easier. That means continuing to improve the experience around the icon itself rather than treating an icon as just another downloadable file. Because the real value isn't only in having access to icons. It's in making the work around them easier. And that's why I built IconMarvel.
